Numerous projects and programmes
conducted by government agencies, NGOs, PGR Unit and other organizations and individuals, several
large scale internationally supported programmes currently address
biodiversity conservation in Armenia, and involve the production of
detailed plans for the future management of biodiversity.
The list of international projects running in Armenia presented
below is not completed but shows the major ones in the filed of PGR. |

“Conservation, Evaluation and Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources from Central Asia and the Caucasus”
Funded by Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and implemented by
ICARDA.
ACIAR's mandate directs it to mobilize Australia's research capacity to help solve agricultural research problems of developing countries.
Project duration is from September 2001 to September 2004.
Plant Genetic Resources Units (PGR Unit) have been established in each country of CAC region to realize the project.

"Development of National Programmes on Plant Genetic Resources in Southeastern Europe"
Objective 1: Conservation and sustainable use of grapevine ( Vitis vinifera) genetic resources in
the Caucasus and northern Black Sea area"
Objective II: Conservation and use of broadleaved forest genetic
Submitted by: International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI)
Duration: 5 years
Goal, Scope and Impact:
The main goal of the Project is to
support the development of national programmes on plant genetic resources in
southeastern Europe. National programmes are defined as sets of activities
undertaken by all relevant stakeholders, which ensure the conditions for a
sustainable conservation and use of plant genetic diversity. In addition, the
Project aims at facilitating international collaboration among individual
national programmes.
The purpose of the Part I of the Project is to strengthen the national
capacity in the countries of the region to ensure long-term maintenance of
Vitis vinifera genetic resources, both cultivated traditional varieties and in the
wild. In particular, the activities aim at identifying, collecting,
characterizing and conserving the extreme richness of grapevine genetic
resources throughout the Caucasus and the northern Black Sea region, as a basis
to improve local viticulture and wine making industry
The National Environmental Action Plan
The Project reviewed current issues for biodiversity conservation in Armenia and identified priority areas for
action, including improved legislation, inventory and monitoring, improved
management in situ (including protected areas), improved ex situ
conservation, sustainable use of biological resources, and development of
educational and scientific programmes on biodiversity. These priorities
have been developed into a detailed action plan.
The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, BSAP
Financed by GEF, via UNDP.
This project is as a first obligation under
the Convention on Biological Diversity, and as an enabling activity for GEF, to allow further funding to be released to finance biodiversity
projects in-country. The first stage of the Biodiversity Strategy and
Action Plan comprises a review of biodiversity and existing measures for
protection (the Country Study on Biodiversity), which is represented by
this first National Report. The BSAP has been developed involving
participants from a range of sectors to identify specific activities
needed to achieve priorities in biodiversity conservation, and is
currently in draft.
