Plant Genetic
Resources (PGR) activities in Azerbaijan are coordinated at the National
level. The National PGR Program has been formally established in 1995.
A National
PGR Inventory exists in Azerbaijan. There are currently
10 institutions
holding ex situ PGR collections.
Last year according to the main goal of the
ICARDA,
EPGRIS and the National PGR
Program our activity was aimed to realizing the following tasks:
(i) to organize
work-groups at the institutions mentioned above and to coordinate their
activities;
(ii) to train personnel of these groups organizing seminars and workshops;
(iii) to start an initial collection procedure in Azerbaijan according to the requirements of ICARDA;
(iv) conversion and loading data;

8 PGR groups have been established and coordinators in each
institute have been appointed at the institutes dealing with in ex situ conservation.
Introductory workshop for three days has been organized aimed to presenting the idea of correct
treatment and using ICARDA's descriptors. As a result our coordinators have already
described materials available according to these descriptors.
On the purpose of collection, presentation, development, inventory,
food security and selection of the genetic resources, strengthening of
sustainable utilization activities on the purpose of completely carrying
out the National Inventory – a new Genetic Resources Institute has been
established under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences on the base
of the Resolution N 12 of January 30 2003 of the Cabinet of Ministers of
the Azerbaijan Republic. According to the National Programme the GRI was
entrusted to conduct these activities as well co-ordination relevant institutions’
activities in the Republic on the field of collection, investigation use of the genetic resources.
By 3 October 2005 the database includes 7171 accessions.
