Major scientific center of republic, in which almost all the branches of botanic science, starting from the study of species composition of plants and their interrelation in various biogeocenoses and plant formations (head academician V.D.Gadjiev) and biochemical processes (head academician J.A.Aliev) are represented.

Date of Foundation: 1936
Founded on basis of the Section of Botany of Azerbaijan branch of the USSR Academy of Science.
The first director was outstanding Soviet botanist, great investigator of Caucasus flora, academician A.A.Grossheim. Professors V.I.Ulyanichev, L.I.Prilipko, I.I.Karyagin, M.G.Abutalibov, Ya.M.Isayev, B.Kh.Tutayuk, Z.Azizbekova, G.E.Karpinos, Sh.O.Baklanov, V.D.Gadjiev, R.Rza-zade, G.Akhundov, N.M.Ismaylov et. all had played the great role in specialist preparation in field of botany. Immense achievements in modern scientific trends-molecular biology and genetics of plant and integration of the Institute to world science belong to academician J.A.Aliev.
At present day there are 140 research workers, among them 2 academicians, 5 corresponding members of ANAS, 13 doctors and 96 candidates of sciences. Two main areas of activity: investigation of florogenesis, biodiversity, plant cover and plant resources of Azerbaijan, their preservation, restoration and rational use; molecular – genetic and physical –chemical base of plant life the activity were curried out in 7 departments and 11 laboratories of the Institute.
There are some big departments: lower plant systematics, higher plant systematics, geobotany, molecular-genetic bases of production processes, plant physiology, radiobiology and radiochemistry.
Over the last years the revised and added «Azerbaijan flora» (1-2 volume) in Azerbaijan language has been prepared for publication. For the first time 2 families, 5 genus and 13 species for Azerbaijan flora were established. The new regions of dissemination are defined for 9 species. A number of high – productive local kinds wheat resistant to drought and high temperature were revealed. Belonging of some plastids genes to G³² type potential promotors at rice and maize plants has been discovered. Proteins «Elip» (early induced by light) with molecular weight 20.5-19.0 and 17.5-15.5 kDa at thylakoid chloroplasts membranes of wheat seedlings were found. In 2001 by personal initiative and headed by academician J.A.Aliev the national program of plant genetic researches of Azerbaijan Republic have elaborated. Over the last five years 4 monographs, more than 300 papers and 350 abstracts were published, 11 patents were obtained. The researchers of the Institute were admitted to Federation of European Biochemical Societies in 1999, and to Federation of European Societies of plant Physiology – in 2000.
