Founded in 1965
to provide the farms with high-quality seeds and apply scientific achievements
in industry. In 1994 the "Terevez tokhum" Scientific and Industrial
Association was founded on the basis of the Institute and its zonal experimental
and control stations.
The first priority trends in the work of the Institute are to create a scientific
basis of vegetable-growing, water-melon, melon and gourd growing, and
potato-growing, to grow new high-yielding varieties, to substantiate new
approaches to the development of seed-growing, and progressive methods of
cultivation with due regard for the soil-climatic peculiarities of different
zones of the republic.
The Association numbers 216 employees of which four are Doctors and thirty-three are
Candidates of science.
Since the establishment of the Institute seven theses for a doctor's degree and 7
candidate dissertations have been defended.
There are eleven creative laboratories functioning at the Institute, i.e. those of
selection, seed-growing, protected soil, agrotechnics, plant protection,
agrochemistry, physiology and biochemistry, crop rotation, mechanization,
potato-growing, storage and processing; two sectors, i.e. those of information
and introduction, and immunity; three zonal control stations (Lenkaran,
Kusarchai and Tauz); two control stations (Masally and Shamkir); the Absheron
subsidiary experimental farm. In recent times, it coordinated its work with the
All-Russian Institutes of Plant-Growing, Plant Protection, Selection,
Seed-Growing, Vegetables, Vegetable-Farming, Potato-Farming; the Moldavian
Scientific institutes of Irrigation-Based Farming, and Vegetable-Growing; and
the Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan Republic.
The workers of the Institute have grown more than 30 varieties, 24 of which have
been zonally distributed. 10 varieties undergo state testing, the methods of
growing these varieties have also been worked out. More than 30 specialized
farms of the republic annually introduce high-yielding varieties, which take up
the area of 200000 hectares, and use the recommendations on the methods of their
growing. The scientists of the Institute have received author's certificates for
more than 30 inventions and rationalization proposals.
The scientists of the Association has published 10 volumes of the proceedings,
monographs, collections, booklets, agrorules and articles.
