GRU employs a full time contracted staff of 14 as well as a number of seasonal and casual staff.  Below are some details of the senior staff members

Head of GRU: Dr. Jan Valkoun

 

Nationality: Czech Republic

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Head of the Genetic Resources Unit since joining ICARDA in 1989
  • Participated in 18 collection missions, mostly for cereal wild relatives
  • Curator of the cereal collection
  • Involved in genetic diversity studies of plant natural populations and ICARDA genebank collections and in wheat pre-breeding using wild relatives

Dr. Ahmed Amri

 

Nationality: Moroccan

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Regional Coordinator of the GEF-UNDP Dryland Agrobiodiversity project

  • Worked for more than 23 years as cereal breeder and is interested in the development of a scientific method and basis for in situ and on-farm conservation of agrobiodiversity

Mr. Jan Konopka

Nationality: Polish

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Genetic resources documentation officer
  • Major tasks:
    Development and management of the genetic resources databases:
    (a) germplasm conserved in ICARDA genebank, (b) Global database of wheat wild relatives maintained in major collections, (c) Global Barley Inventory, (d) Biodiversity surveys of GEF project, etc.
  • Assistance to NARS in design and implementation of efficient genetic resources documentation systems
  • SINGER coordinator

Dr. Kenneth Street

 

Nationality: Australian

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Curator of the food and forage legume collection. These duties include the general maintenance of the medium and long term collections, undertaking diversity studies and seeking to expand the collection with materials from under represented areas.
  • In addition to curating the food and forage legume collection he also coordinates most of GRUs interests in Genetic Resource development in central Asia and the Caucasus which includes organizing and participating in collections missions in the area. He also coordinates various other PGR special projects run in collaboration with Australian institutions and the N.I. Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry (VIR), St. Petersburg, Russia.

Dr. Kamel Chabane

 

Nationality: Algerian

Duties and Responsibilities: His work includes research on biodiversity. Part of the research is to:

  • Introduce molecular markers
  • Evaluate the diversity in natural populations of crop wild relatives
  • Study the genetic diversity in sub-sets of ICARDA’s ex situ collections (core and regional collections)
The research involves countries like Algeria, Lebanon, Jordan, Libya, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Iraq , Morocco and recently Central Asia

Mr. Bilal Omar Humeid

 

Nationality: Jordanian

Duties and Responsibility:

  • Seed Bank Manager
  • Seed conservation specialist
  • Cereals specialist
  • Assisting national programs to develop seed conservation facilities

Dr. Siham Asaad

 

Nationality: Syrian

Duties and Responsibilities: Seed Pathologist/Research Associat, Seed Health Laboratory.
Responsibilities include:

  • Supervising Seed Health Testing for seed-borne fungi, bacteria, nematodes and parasitic weeds for incoming and outgoing seed
  • Supervising field inspection for cereals and food/feed legumes crops
  • Conducting researches for seed- borne diseases
  • Conducting training of seed health aspects for individuals or for group courses
