trainings organized and supported by ICARDA and associated with pgr work in the cac republics since 1998
Acknowledgement! Most of the activities that took place in the CAC republics would not have been
possible without the facilitation and assistance of the ICARDA office/CGIAR Program
Facilitation Unit (PFU) located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. We gratefully
acknowledge the leadership and support of the the unit's management and
staff.
Assisting national programs from ICARDAs mandate region to develop their
own capacity to collect conserve and curate their own plant genetic
resources is an important component of GRUs activitities. Training
courses are regularly conducted by GRU scientists and include topics such as
Genebank Management, Documentation, Field Taxonomy and Molecular
Characterization.
Since 1984 - 2002 GRU has trained 689 scientists. In addition to training programs, scientists and
technical staff from GRU also supply technical backstopping for national
programs. For example a project sponsored by the Australian Center
for International Agricultural Research and coordinated by GRU has
facilitated the development of small genetic resource units in each of
the eight CAC republics. In a related activity GRUs genebank manager has
recently been traveling to the Caucus countries to advise on seed
storage facility design and construction.
