 Improving Rural Livelihoods through Efficient On-Farm Water and Soil Fertility Management
ICARDA research team together with national scientists of Central Asian countries
(Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan)
after several technical meetings, supported by the CGIAR, initiated in 2000 a three-year
applied research project on soil and water management supported by Asian Development Bank, ADB (RETA 5866). The project addressed major on-farm soil and water management
constraints with the aim to increase agricultural production through
maintaining soil fertility, enhancing nutrient-use efficiency and improving the
productivity of water

Regional Network of
Wheat Variety Promotion and Seed Production
GTZ-CIMMYT project was initiated in 2000 in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The objective of the project is establishment of a regional network to support promotion
of new wheat varieties and seed production in Central Asia with an emphasis on pilot mechanisms
for fast and economically sustainable variety promotion and seed production. The project envisages
implementation of three specific tasks: (i) support of the network structure, communication,
regional consultations and exchange of experience as well as material support of breeding and basic
seed production; (ii) testing of new wheat varieties, which so far were not present on the market of
the countries participating in the project; (iii) the initial steps for re-establishment of the
regional network of breeding and seed production.
